FAQ

Q) Am I the only one who can bring my baby each week? A) No, your baby is considered the student and can therefore have any caregiver bring them to class each week as schedules allow: spouse, nanny, grandparent, auntie, etc. Also, up to two caregivers are invited to participate in each class.

Q) What if I miss a class? A) Babies + life are unpredictable, so I’ve got you covered. The great news is that this material builds on itself week to week. For example, if you miss the leg massage instruction one week, we will circle back and review it the following week. I also create a private Google Folder for each series that includes PDF packets with diagrams/instructions, as well as short videos of the massage strokes and song snippets, so that you can review the content you missed, share the content between parents/caregivers, and/or jog your memory after class. For the sake of building community, in-person participation is encouraged each week; however, occasionally I can arrange to Zoom you in for part of the class if you need to participate from home. Advance clearance is needed in this case.

Q) Can my older child/toddler attend the class? A) While I love the idea of including siblings in the massage, music, and family dance content at home/on Zoom, this series is truly a “bonding” class, and works best if your one-on-one attention can be devoted to your baby.

Q) Will you instruct on topics such as developmental leaps (Wonder Weeks), sleep hygiene/advice, or general newborn care? A) No. As a pediatric massage therapist, children’s musician, and GroovaRoo™ babywearing dance instructor, my certifications qualify me to speak on these topics alone. As a mother of two children and professional who works with hundreds of families each week, I often have resources I can share as needed (as do the group members/peers in each class). Content hours, however, are not devoted to these topics.

Q) My partner would like to come but can only take off work for one or two classes. Which ones would you recommend?

Class #1 is the most important as we cover all the foundational information to get you started with an infant massage practice at home. Aside from that, feel free to ask me which class might be best based on your unique set of circumstances (e.g. gas/tummy/colic routine, teething routine, interest in babywearing support, etc). Also, please mark your calendars for Classes #3 and #6 @ 3:30pm-4:30pm, as we like to invite everyone out to class at Lefty’s Taphouse (weather depending/outdoor patio), just down the road on Elvas. Partners and older children are welcome to attend with you and baby for a bite, sip, or just to enjoy each other’s company in a more casual environment.

Graduates of “My Baby’s Awake” have said:

”Jillian’s class provided me with so many unexpected and amazing tools. I loved learning the infant massage techniques, as well as baby-wearing dances. My daughter absolutely loves the massages and she also loved being around other babies in the class. I wasn’t expecting to also talk about such deep and pertinent topics each week, though, and I think that was my favorite part. Jillian created a safe, accepting environment where we all felt comfortable sharing vulnerably and showing up exactly as we were. I highly recommend this course for parents looking to create community, connect authentically, and learn some amazing tools for engaging with your child.” ~June 2023 Graduate

“This was the best place for me to bring my baby. As a new mom, leaving the house with a baby is such a huge task, this class was the perfect place to go to practice leaving the house while also getting valuable info & meeting new baby friends!” ~June 2023 Graduate

“Once my newborn became more alert, I realized I didn’t exactly know ‘what to do’ with her during the day. I felt guilty about it. Jillian’s class was transformative: it gave me new little rituals and activities to try, and more importantly, it gave me self-confidence about how I was spending time with my baby. This class has been the best gift I’ve given myself as a new parent.”

”The little community we formed within the class was amazing and so so helpful. I don’t think I realized how isolated I was feeling. The class has been something I look forward to every week and has brought a lot more fun and connection to this overwhelming time.”

”I’m not someone who normally feels comfortable singing… But Jillian helped me get out of my shell. Now I sing to my baby every day and it’s fun for both of us.”
